A solution of 3.7 g of ethyl 2-{[3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,2-benzisoxazol-6-yl]thio}-2-methylpropionate, 30 ml of 15% sodium hydroxide solution and 30 ml of methanol, is stirred under reflux for 3 hr. The methanol is evaporated and the aqueous solution poured into ice/dilute hydrochloric acid. The precipitate is collected, dried and recrystallized from toluene to afford 2-{[3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,2-benzisoxazol-6yl]thio}-2-methylpropionic acid, mp 176°-7° C.
