5-Hydroxymethyl-4-methoxymethyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxylic acid isopropyl ester (1.0 g) is dissolved in dichloromethane. A solution of 0.83 phosphorous tribromide in 10 ml of dichloromethane is added. After 20 hours the resulting precipitate is suctioned off. The yield is 1.0 g of yellow crystals with indeterminate melting point.
