A 20 ml solution of 50% sodium hyroxide was added dropwise to 2-bromostyrene (10.0 g, 54.9 mmol) in 100 ml of chloroform. The reaction mixture was warmed to 45° C. for 1 hour. After cooling the solution was separated and the organic layer was dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated. The resulting liquid was flash chromatographed, affording 11.6 g of the desired compound.
