Reaction of 3-(1-octynyl)furan-2-carboxaldehyde (1.02 g, 5 mmole from example 14) with malonic acid (1.04 g, 10 mmole) as described in Example 2 gave 1.08 g (88%) of the title compound, mp (Hexane) 81°-81.5° C., νmax (mull) 2600(broad), 1690, 1670(sh), 1620, 1410, 1320, 1270, 970, 890, 770 cm-1 ; δ(CDCl3) 0.91(3H, t, J=6.9 Hz), 1.34(2H, m), 1.46(2H, m), 1.62(2H, m), 2.45(2H, t, J=7.0 Hz), 6.40(1H, d, J=15.9 Hz), 6.46(1H, d, J=1.8 Hz), 7.41(1H, d, J=1.8 Hz), 7.66(1H, d, J=15.9 Hz), 11.60(1H, broad).
