Reaction Steps

Following the procedure described in Example 1, part C above, for oxidizing the potassium salt of 2-[2,4-dimethoxy-2',4'-bis(dimethylamino)benzhydryl]-5-dimethylaminobenzoic acid, there was obtained 9.0 g of 3-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-[2,4-bis(dimethylamino)phenyl]-6-dimethylaminophthalide (Formula I: R=CH3 ; X=H; Y=2,4-(CH3O)2C6H3 ; Z=2,4-[(CH3)2N]2C6H3) a reddish-brown-colored solid which melted over the range 153°-160° C.
