Procedure
4.4 ml (54.3 mmol) of pyridine were added to a suspension of 13.3 g (43.6 mmol) of 5-chloro-3-(2-ethoxypyridin-3-yl)-3-hydroxy-1,3-dihydroindol-2-one from example a.1 in 50 ml of dichloromethane. After the reaction mixture had been cooled to 0° C., 3.8 ml (52.3 mmol) of thionyl chloride was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for one hour and then poured into ice-water. After stirring for 15 minutes, the organic phase was separated off. The aqueous phase was extracted several times with dichloromethane. The combined organic phase was dried over magnesium sulfate and filtered, and the solvent was removed in vacuo. 15.6 g of the title compound were obtained as a yellowish solid which was employed without further purification in the next stage.
