In step d of Scheme 1, compound (5b) is nitrated with nitric acid (HNO3), preferably in the presence of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to yield 3-(3-chloro-4-nitro-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (5c). The nitration may be conducted at temperatures from about −10° C. to about 30° C.
