Procedure

To a solution of 3-[(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)(1-methylpiperidin-4-yloxy)methyl]benzaldehyde (example 505B, 310 mg) in methanol (4 mL) is added portionwise sodium borohydride (50 mg). The reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 15 minutes then heated at reflux for 3 h. Methanol is removed under reduced pressure. Water is added and the aqueous phase is extracted by ethyl acetate. The organic phase is washed by water, then dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give {3-[(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)(1-methylpiperidin-4-yloxy)methyl]-phenyl}methanol. 1H NMR: 9.85 (sl, 1H), 7.78-7.65 (m, 1H), 7.50-7.12 (m, 7H), 5.87 (s, 1H), 4.64 (s, 2H), 3.62-3.45 (m, 1H), 2.78-2.58 (m, 2H), 2.22 (s, 3H), 2.15-1.50 (m, 6H).
