Procedure
Compound 11 was prepared as follows. 5-(4-Isopropyl-phenyl)-5-oxo-pentanoic acid (5 g, 21.3 mmol) was dissolved in 75 mL ethanol in a 250 mL flask. Sodium hydroxide (0.85 g, 21.3 mmol) was added and the reaction stirred overnight under reduced pressure on a rotary evaporator. The solid was dried under vacuum and used without further purification. Found: C, 60.24, H, 6.66, Na, 9.21%; C14H17O3Na requires C, 61.28; H, 6.98, Na, 8.38%. 1H NMR (D2O): δ 7.7, d, 2H (aryl-H's); δ 7.2 d, 2H (aryl H's); δ 2.9, t, 2H(CH2 α to carbonyl); δ 2.8, multiplet, 1H, (CH of isopropyl group); δ 2.1, t, 2H (CH2 α to COOH); δ 1.8, q, 2H (CH2 β to both carbonyl & COOH), δ 1.1, d, 6H (CH3's of isopropyl group).
