Procedure
[2-chloro-4-(4-ethylpiperazin-1-yl)phenyl]methanol was dissolved in dichloromethane (30 mL) at 0° C. under nitrogen. Phosphorus tribromide (4.2 mL, 42 mmol) was added dropwise. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction was quenched by addition of 10% NaHCO3 solution (5 mL). After 10 minutes, Na2SO4 (30 g) was added. The solvent was filtered and evaporated to provide 1-[4-(bromomethyl)-3-chlorophenyl]-4-ethylpiperazine, which was used without further purification.
