A mixture of 4-({[tert-butyl(dimethyl)silyl]oxy}methyl)-6-methyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carbonitrile (Cpd H, 6.6 g, 24 mmol), Ag2O (6.3 g, 27 mmol), and benzylchloride (4.1 g, 33 mmol) in toluene (79 mL) was heated at 100° C. for 21 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered through CELITE® then concentrated under vacuum. The residue was purified by column chromatography (0-30%, EtOAc/heptane) to give 2-(benzyloxy)-4-({[tert-butyl(dimethyl)-silyl]oxy}methyl)-6-methylpyridine-3-carbonitrile (Cpd I, 6.5 g, 74%) as a tan solid.
