To a 100 mL volume three-necked flask, 10.0 g of 2-(2,6-diethyl-4-methylphenyl)-2-oxoacetohydrazine ((12-1)-(11)-39), 38 ml of methanol and 6.16 ml of propanal were added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was washed with hexane and dried under reduced pressure to give 9.44 g or 1-[2-(2,6-diethyl-4-methylphenyl)-2-oxoacetyl]-2-propylidenehydrazine ((40-a)-(14)-3).
