A mixture of 4-(7-formyl-6-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-1H-isoquinolin-2-yl)-benzonitrile (200 mg, 0.68 mmol) and 96% (w/w) sulfuric acid (3 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. The next day poured onto ice-water (10 mL), the pH was adjusted with K2CO3 to 9 and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The residue was purified by column chromatography over silica, elating with a 95:5 mixture of chloroform and methanol. In this manner the title compound (85 mg, 0.27 mmol, 39.7%) was obtained as a solid.
