Procedure
1.58 g of 6,7-dihydro-2-mercapto-7-methoxy-3H,5H-cyclopenta[d]pyrimidin-4-one [prepared as described in step (c) above] and 4 g of Raney nickel were suspended in 15 ml of distilled water, and then 3 ml of concentrated aqueous ammonia were added to the resulting suspension. The mixture was then heated under reflux for 3 hours, after which time the resulting insoluble materials were filtered off from the hot reaction mixture. The filtrate was then evaporated under reduced pressure, to give 1.1 g of the title compound as colorless crystals.
