Reaction Steps
2.5 ml of phosphorus oxychloride were added to 1.0 g of 6,7-dihydro-7-methoxy-3H,5H-cyclopenta[d]pyrimidin-4-one [prepared as described in step (d) above], and the mixture was heated under reflux for 5 minutes. The mixture was then cooled to room temperature, 20 ml of chloroform were added, and the mixture was then poured into ice-water. The cold mixture was made alkaline by the addition of concentrated aqueous ammonia, and then the chloroform layer was separated. This chloroform layer was washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and treated with active carbon. The chloroform was then evaporated off under reduced pressure, to give 1.01 g of the title compound as a colorless oil.
