Procedure

A solution of N-[(3S)-3-[[(1,1-dimethylethoxy)carbonyl]amino]-2-hydroxy-5-methylhexyl]-2-[[(phenylmethyl)amino]carbonyl]-pentanamide (0.7 g., 1.46 mmole) in saturated hydrochloric acid/ethyl acetate (25 ml.) is stirred at 0° for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is concentrated to a solid residue. Trituration with ether gives 0.60 g. of N-[(3S)-3-amino-2-hydroxy-5-methylhexyl]-2-[[(phenylmethyl)amino[carbonyl]-pentanamide, monohydrochloride as an oily white solid.
