A suspension of 40.4 g (0.088 mol) of [2-(2-nitro-6-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-ethyl] propanedioic acid, dimethyl ester (see Example 7A) in methanol was treated with a cold suspension of 5% palladium on charcoal in methanol (under nitrogen) and placed on the Parr apparatus at 58 psi of hydrogen. The mixture was heated at 50°-55° C. for 1 hour to assure that all of the starting material had dissolved. The mixture was removed from the Parr apparatus and allowed to stand at room temperature overnight. The flask was heated to dissolve the crystallized product, and the hot solution was filtered through Celite (under nitrogen) and washed with hot methanol. The colorless filtrate was concentrated on a rotary evaporator to yield 36.9 g of the title compound, melting point 111°-113° C. A sample crystallized from methanol melted at 112°-114° C.
