Reaction Steps

4.0 g (0.06 mole) of 85% KOH are added to 8.7 g (0.03 mole) of 1,3-dimethyl-5-(4-hydroxyphenylcarbamoyl)barbituric acid in 70 ml of toluene and 50 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide. The mixture is dewatered with a water separator at reflux temperature. After the toluene has been distilled off, 4.3 g (0.03 mole) of 3-chloro-6-methoxypyridazine are added. The bath temperature is increased gradually until a temperature in the range from 120° to 140° C. is reached, and the mixture is kept at this temperature for 2 hours. The mixture is then cooled to 80° C., neutralised with dilute hydrochloric acid, cooled to room temperature and diluted with water. The precipitate is isolated by filtration, washed with water and dried.
