1-(4-Benzyloxy-3-nitrophenyl)-2-bromoethanone (12.6 g) was dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide (40 ml) and the solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 3 days. The solution was poured onto ice and the product was collected as the hydrate (8.7 g). τ (d6DMSO) 4.58 (2H, s), 4.33 (1H, s), 2.25-2.65 (6H, m), 2.07 (2H, br), 1.30-1.87 (2H, m).
