Procedure

A mixture of 5-(3dimethylamino-1-oxo-2-propen-1-yl)-1-(3-(4-pyrimidinyl)phenyl)benzimidazole (307 mg) and NH2OH,HCl (135 mg, 2.5 equivalents) in methanol (14 ml) was stirred at 80° C. for 2 hours. After cooling the mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with brine, dried, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was chromatographied (CH2Cl2 -methanol 40:1 (v/v)) to give 5-(5-isoxazolyl)-1-(3-(4-pyrimidinyl)phenyl)benzimidazole (226 mg, 80%).
