Procedure
607 g (3.1 mol) of N-methylglucamine (NMG) are suspended in 729 g of methanol in a 2 l four-necked flask with a stirrer, dropping funnel, reflux condenser and thermometer. The reaction mixture is heated to 63° C., while stirring. 163 g (3.1 mol) of acrylonitrile are added dropwise in the course of 30 minutes. When the addition has ended, the clear solution is stirred at 63° C. for a further 3 hours. According to analysis by gas chromatography, the conversion in the reaction is complete, so that the reaction product can be employed directly for the hydrogenation (second process stage).
