Procedure
a mixture of fuming nitric acid (8.4 g) and conc. sulfuric acid (260 g) was cooled to 0-10° C. and the known methyl 3-acetylamino-4-methylbenzoate (26.3 g, 127 mmol) was added portionwise with stirring. After stirring for several hours, the mixture was poured onto ice which subsequently melted. The product was collected by suction filtration, washed with water and dried. The solid was recrystallized from isopropanol to give 27 g of yellow powder.
