Procedure

To a solution of the product of Example 12 in 30 mL of methanol was added 7.5 mL (0.038 mol) of 5N sodium hydroxide solution and the resulting mixture was heated to reflux for 66 h. The reaction was then cooled to room tempeature and the organics were removed in vacuo. The resulting mixture was acidified with 10% HCl and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organics were washed with water and brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The resulting residue was triturated with ether and filtered to provide 0.984 g (79%) of the desired carboxylic acid as a white solid. Electospray Mass Spec: 427 (M+H).
