A solution of tert-butyl N-(4-iodo-3-pyridyl)carbamate (20.0 g, 62 mmol), mesitylboric acid (10.2 g, 62 mmol), Pd(PPh3)4 (3.6 g, 3.12 mmol), barium hydroxide octahydrate (49.3 g, 47.3 mmol) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (400 mL) and water (67 mL) was heated under reflux for six hours. The mixture was filtered through Celite, and the filtrate was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated, to give the title compound (containing 22.3 g of impurities) as pale brown crystals.
