The structure-directing agent (SDA) 8-azonia-8,8-diethyltetracyclo[4.3.3.12,5.01,6]tridec-3-ene cation is synthesized according to the procedure described below. To a solution of freshly cracked cyclopentadiene (40 grams) in 1200 ml of dichloromethane is added 1-cyclopentene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid anhydride (30 grams). The reaction is stirred at room temperature for several days. The desired product, 8-oxa-tetracyclo[4.3.3.12,5.01,6]tridec-3-ene-7,9-dione, is isolated by recrystallization (after stripping off solvent) from 2/1 ethyl ether, dichloromethane with refrigeration.
