Procedure

A stirred mixture of 2-indanone (250 g, 1.89 mol), sodium cyanide (278 g, 5.68 mol) and ammonium carbonate (1.81 kg, 18.9 mol) in water (1.5 L) and EtOH (1.5 L) was heated at 70° C. for 3 h, then allowed to cool to ambient temperature. The precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water, and dried in vacuo to give the title compound. MS: m/z=202.0 (M+1).
