Bromine (0.83 g, 5.2 mmol) in chloroform (2 mL) was added slowly to a solution of ethyl 3-oxo-3-pyridin-2-ylpropanoate (1.0 g, 5.2 mmol) and chloroform (25.0 mL) at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred for 1 h and was concentrated under reduced pressure to give 1 ethyl 2-bromo-3-oxo-3-pyridin-2-ylpropanoate hydrobromide salt as an amber oil (1.8 g, 100%). LCMS calc. for C10H11BrNO3 (M+H)+: m/z=272.0, 274.0. found: 272.0, 274.0.
