[1,1′-Biphenyl]-3,5-dicarbaldehyde (3.03 g, 14.4 mmol) and MeOH (60 mL) were added to a round-bottom flask. To the solution was added N′-(3-aminopropyl)-N3-isobutylpropane-1,3-diamine (5.40 g, 28.8 mmol), and the reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 24 h. Sodium borohydride (0.55 g, 14.4 mmol) was added, and the reaction mixture was stirred for 2 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to afford a white solid. Aqueous NaOH (10%, 50 mL) was added, and the reaction mixture stirred for 30 min. The solution was extracted with CHCl3 (3×75 mL). The organic layers were combined, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford a clear oil which was used without further purification.
