Procedure
To a mixture of methyl 6-((2,4-dichlorobenzyl)oxy)-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-3-carboxylate (400 mg) and DMSO (11 mL) were added paraformaldehyde (37.4 mg) and sodium methoxide (6.8 mg). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The mixture was quenched with water and 1N HCl at 0° C. and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was separated, washed successively with water and brine, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (EtOAc/hexane) to give the title compound (332.6 mg).
