To a solution of 4-chloro-2-(1-oxo-3,4,6,7,8,9-hexahydropyrido[3,4-b]indolizin-2(1H)-yl)nicotinaldehyde 139a (1.0 g, 3.0 mmol) in methanol (30 mL) was added sodium borohydride (380 mg, 9.0 mmol) at 30° C. The reaction mixture was stirred for another 1 h and quenched with water (10 mL). It was then concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was extracted with dichloromethane (3×20 mL). The combined organic extract was dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered, and evaporated under reduced pressure to afford 244a as a yellow solid (920 mg, 92%). MS-ESI: [M+H]+ 332.3
