As presented in the following reaction formula, a solution of bromoethyl acetate (BrCH2COOEt; 7.5 g, 0.045 mol) in acetonitrile (20 mL) was added to a mixture of N-(1-methyl-3-oxo-indan-5-yl)benzamide (10 g, 0.037 mol) and anhydrous potassium carbonate (10.4 g, 0.075 mol) in acetonitrile (150 mL), and the reaction mixture was refluxed for 5 hours. After the completion of reaction, the mixture was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated to give the crude product [benzyl-(1-methyl-3-oxo-indan-5-yl)-amino]-acetic acid ethyl ester (8 g, yield: 63%) as a yellow solid.
