A mixture of 4-iodo-1H-pyrazole (10 g, 51 mmol), methyl oxirane-2-carboxylate (6.8 g, 67 mmol) and tripotassium phosphate (12 g, 57 mmol) in dioxane (80 mL) was stirred at 90° C. for 4 hours. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was diluted with water and extracted with DCM. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (petroleum ether/EtOAc) to afford methyl 2-hydroxy-3-(4-iodo-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)propanoate. MS ESI calc'd. for C7H10IN2O3 [M+H]+ 297. found 297. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.50 (d, J=3.2 Hz, 2H), 4.51-4.46 (m, 3H), 4.27-4.25 (m, 1H), 1.31-1.28 (m, 3H).
