Procedure

Sodium borohydride (621 mg, 16.42 mmol) was added to a mixture of (R)-tert-butyl (4-chloro-3-oxobutan-2-yl)carbamate (910 mg, 4.10 mmol) in methanol (9 mL) at 0° C., and the mixture was stirred for one hour at 0° C. A few drops of acetic acid were added then the mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford tert-butyl ((2R)-4-chloro-3-hydroxybutan-2-yl)carbamate. 1H NMR (500 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 6.65 (d, J=8.1 Hz, 1H), 5.24 (d, J=5.6 Hz, 1H), 3.58-3.53 (m, 1H), 3.50-3.44 (m, 2H), 3.44-3.34 (m, 1H), 1.36 (s, 9H), 0.99 (d, J=6.3, 3H).
