A solution of 2,2,2-trichloroethyl chloroformate (2.2 g.) in benzene (10 ml.) was dropwise added to a solution of 2-hydroxyimino-2-phenylacetonitrile (1.5 g.) and triethylamine (1.40 ml.) in benzene (20 ml.) at room temperature, and the mixture was stirred for 3 hours at the same temperature. To the reaction mixture were added benzene and water, and the organic layer was washed with water and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off and the residue was crystallized by adding a small amount of ether and n-hexane. The crystals were collected by filtration and recrystallized from methanol to give 2-(2,2,2-trichloroethoxycarbonyloxyimino)-2-phenylacetonitrile (2.7 g.), mp 82° to 84° C.
