(R)-Methyl 5-(3-(3,3-difluoro-5-formyl-2-oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)propyl)thiophene-2-carboxylate was prepared from 12f using the oxidation procedure (Step K) described for the preparation of intermediate 13a from intermediate 12a to afford the title intermediate (80 mg) as a pale yellow oil; TLC Rf 0.60 (solvent system: 7:93 v/v methanol-dichloromethane).
