Procedure

Methyl 1-(7-chloroquinol-4-yl)-5-methoxy-2-methylindol-3-ylacetate (1g.) and sodium borohydride (1g.) in methanol (30ml.) were refluxed for 1 hour. Most of the methanol was then removed in vacuo, and the residue was diluted with water (50ml.), and extracted with ethyl acetate (3 × 50ml.). The combined extracts were dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give an oil, which was chromatographed on silica gel (100g.) using, as eluant, petroleum ether (b.p. 40°-60° C.) containing an increasing proportion of ether (polarity increased by incremental addition of 10% v/v ether) to give 1-(7-chloroquinol-4-yl)-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-5-methoxy-2-methylindole, m.p. 143°-145° C.
