Procedure
5.4 g of sodium methylate were added with stirring to a mixture of 26.5 g of m-butyryl-3-chlorocrotonanilide and 250 ml of methanol and after stirring for 4 hours at 20° C, the mixture was vacuum filtered to remove sodium chloride. The filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure and the residue was chromatographed over silica gel. Elution with a 7-3 mixture of benzene and ethyl acetate yielded 14 g of m-butyryl-3-methoxy-crotonanilide melting at 81° C.
