Reaction Steps
A solution of 2,2,2-trichloroethyl chloroformate (2.2 g.) in benzene (10 ml.) was added dropwise to a solution of 2-hydroxyimino-2-phenylacetonitrile (1.5 g.) and triethylamine (1.40 ml.) in benzene (20 ml.) at room temperature, the mixture was stirred for 3 hours at the same temperature. Benzene and water were added to the reaction mixture layer was washed with water and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off and the residue was crystallized by adding a small amount of ether and n-hexane. The crystals were collected by filtration and recrystallized from methanol to give 2-(2,2,2-trichloroethoxycarbonyloxyimino)-2-phenylacetonitrile (2.7 g.), mp 82° to 84° C.
