Procedure
1-(5-Bromo-2-fluoro-phenyl)-ethanone (66.0 g, 304 mmol) and 350 mL anhydrous hydrazine were charged into a 1 Liter round bottom flask. The resulting reaction mixture was refluxed at 117° C. for 5 hours. After this period, the reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, and the excess hydrazine was evaporated under reduced pressure to yield a white solid. 400 mL water was poured into the resulting solid and the water was then filtered off. The solid was washed with 400 mL water twice. To remove the trace amount of hydrazine, the white solid was taken up in 600 mL EtOAc and washed with 300 mL water twice and saturated brine solution. The EtOAc layer was then dried over sodium sulfate. Removal of the solvent gave the desired product as a white amorphous solid (60.0 g, yield=94%). The product was used directly in the next step without further purification.
