To solution of methyl 4-(bromomethyl)picolinate (350 mg, 1.52 mmol) in methanol (5 mL) was added a solution of sodium azide (198 mg, 3.04 mmol) in water (0.5 mL). The mixture was heated to reflux for 2 hours, then was concentrated. The resulting residue was dissolved in EtOAc (10 mL) and water (10 mL). The organic layer was separated, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to give methyl 4-(azidomethyl)picolinate (280 mg).
