A mixture of Example C1 (22.0 g, 119 mmol) and MnO2 (44 g, 506 mmol) in CHCl3 (300 mL) was stirred at RT for 3 h. The reaction was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated to give 4-(methylamino)-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde as a pale solid (20 g, 92% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): 9.71 (s, 1 H), 8.60 (br s, 1 H), 8.49 (s, 1 H), 2.96 (d, J=4.8 Hz, 3 H), 2.48 (s, 3 H) MS (ESI) m/z: 184.0 (M+H+).
