Procedure

100 mg of 5-bromo-1-oxoindane was dissolved in 10 ml of toluene, 0.3 ml of 1,4-dibromobutan and 132 mg of tert-butoxypotassium were added, and the mixture was stirred all night by heating at 130° C. under reflux. The reaction solution was cooled down to room temperature, the solvents were distilled outunder reduced pressure and the residues were separated and purified by silicagel chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane=1/2) to obtain 71 mg of the above compound as a yellow oily matter.
