2.65 g of ethyl 2-guanidino-4-methyl-thiazole-5-carboxylate hydrochloride (prepared according to Example 3) are heated to 75° C. for 7 hrs. in 70 ml of ethanol and 11 ml of 2N NaOH. The reaction mixture is evaporated to dryness in a vacuum. The residue is taken up in 40 ml of ethanol, the solution is filtered clear and the product is precipitated with 2 ml of acetic acid. There are obtained 1.82 g of 2-guanidino-4-methyl-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid of m.p. 1 96° C.
