5.11 g of of 4-[(3-bromophenyl)amino]-6,7-dimethoxy-3-quinolinecarbonitrile and 30.74 g of pyridine hydrochloride were intimately mixed and then heated under nitrogen at 207° C. for an hour. On cooling the reaction was treated with about 100 ml of water and the solid was filtered. This solid was digested with methyl cellusolve and washed with ether to give 3.00 g of 4-[(3-bromophenyl)amino]-6,7-dihydroxy-3-quinolinecarbonitrile: mass spectrum (electrospray, m/e): M+H 356, 358.
