Procedure

1,2-Diaminoethane (21 g, 350 mmol) was added to methyl tetrahydropyran-2-ylthioacetate (20 g, 105 mmol) and the mixture heated at 75° C. for 2 h. Volatile components were then removed from the reaction mixture in vacuo to give the N-(2-aminoethyl)-tetrahydropyran-2-ylthioacetamide in essentially quantitative yield. This product was contaminated with a small quantity of 1,2-diaminoethane, but it was sufficiently pure to be used without further purification.
