Procedure
Prepare a solution of 5-isopropoxy-2,4-dimethoxy-fluoren-9-one (0.48 g, 1.6 mmole) in 25 mL CH2Cl2 and stir at 0° C. under argon. Dropwise, add boron trichloride (1.0 M in 1.8 mL CH2Cl2, 1.8 mmole) and stir the reaction for 1 hour. Quench with 20 mL water and stir vigorously. Filter and wash twice the resulting precipitate with 100 mL methylene chloride. Separate the organic layer from the filtrate and wash with brine. Dry with MgSO4, filter and strip off the solvent. Recrystallize the solid from CH2Cl2 /hexane (4:6) to obtain the title compound (0.28 g, 1.1 mmole, 69%). Rf =0.3.
