1-(1,2-Dimethyl-propyl)-4-methyl-cyclohex-3-enecarbaldehyde (415 g) and methanol (300 mL) were charged into a reaction flask. Sodium borohydride (15 g) was added slowly and the temperature was kept at 35° C. with an ice bath. The reaction mixture was aged for 2 hours and quenched onto HCl (42 g) and ice and extracted with toluene. The reaction mixture was washed until neutral. The rushed over material provided the recovery of [1-(1,2-dimethyl-propyl)-4-methyl-cyclohex-3-enyl]methanol (366 g).
