Procedure
8.0 g of methyl 4H-imidazo-[2,1-c][1,4]-benzoxazine-2-carboxylate were added to a stirred mixture of 25 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid and 25 ml of concentrated nitric acid at 10° C. The ester slowly went into solution with the solution turning yellow and after three hours at room temperature, thin layer chromatography indicated no starting material remained. 500 ml of water were then added and the yellow product thus formed was filtered off, washed well with water and then dried over P2O5 to obtain 7.5 g (79% yield) of methyl 8-nitro-4H-imidazo-[2,1-c][1,4]-benzoxazine-2-carboxylate with a melting point of 270°-2° C.
