Sodium borohydride [3.78 g (100 mmol)] was added to a solution of 2.82 g (10.0 mmol) of 4-(3-phthalimidopropyloxy)pyridine in 150 ml of ethanol. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. After the solvent was distiled off, brine was added to the residue. The mixture was extracted with chloroform and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off and then the residue was purified by column chromatography (eluent: ethanol/ethyl acetate=1:10) to obtain 1.488 g of the desired compound (yield: 52.0%, colorless crystals).
