2-[4-(4-Trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenoxy]propionic acid fluoride (0.10 mol) is added to a solution of the thallium salt of cyclohexane-1,3-dione in ether (200 ml) over a period of 30 minutes. The mixture is filtered and the filtrate is concentrated to give 2-[[2-[4-(4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenoxy]propionyl]]cyclohexane-1,3-dione (V; Y is H, Z is CF3, R1 is CH3 and n is two).
